Claude for Accountants: What It Can and Cannot Do in a Practice

The practice tasks an assistant genuinely shortens, and the ones it should not touch

It is good at the advisory half: preparing a review, drafting the update, summarising a meeting into actions, answering a question across the whole client book. It is poor at compliance work with a deadline and a signature, and should not be near it.

The split is not about difficulty. It is about whether being approximately right is acceptable.

Where it genuinely helps

Preparing for a client conversation. Pulling the position together, the thing that takes forty minutes the night before, gets much shorter. What you do with the position is unchanged.

Drafting the update. The quarterly note, the summary after a meeting, the follow-up listing what was agreed. These are slow to start and quick to edit, which is exactly the shape of work a draft helps with.

Turning a meeting into actions. A transcript into a list of commitments with owners. Most practices do this badly, not from carelessness but because it happens at the end of a long day.

Questions across the client book. Which clients have not had a review this quarter. Which had a worse quarter than last. Nobody builds a report for these, because the question changes each time.

Explaining something to a client. Taking a position you understand and producing three paragraphs a business owner will follow. This is translation, and models are good at it.

Where it should not go

Anything with a lodgement date and a signature. Compliance work has to be deterministic, repeatable and auditable. An assistant is none of those by design. The risk is not that it is wrong often, it is that when it is wrong there is no trace of why.

Anything requiring a professional judgement you have not made. It can draft the recommendation. It cannot hold the responsibility for it, and a draft that reads confidently is more dangerous than one that reads tentatively.

Anything on a schedule with nobody present. An assistant connection does nothing until asked. If it must happen on the 28th, it belongs in software built to do that.

What the connection actually gives you

Reading the ledger answers questions about numbers. That is the easy half and the one everyone starts with.

The harder half is that most of what a practice knows about a client is not in the ledger at all. What was promised in March. Which three actions came out of it. Whether the documents arrived. What you will open with next time. None of that is a number, so no amount of access to the accounting system produces it, and that is the gap that makes advisory feel like it runs on memory.

The order to do this in

Start on your own practice numbers rather than client files. You learn what the connection actually supports with nothing at stake.

Pick one recurring task, usually review preparation, and run it for a month against your normal method. Keep what survives the comparison.

Check the engagement terms before client data is involved, and decide who in the firm may connect a system at all. That second one is worth settling before somebody does it on a Sunday.

Where Empiraa sits

Empiraa GPS is a strategy and client delivery platform that helps advisors and consultants manage client plans, demonstrate progress and grow recurring revenue. Each client has their own portal holding the plan, the actions, the documents and the history, so the review is written from a live record rather than rebuilt from memory. ANI is built into the platform. GPS shipped its MCP in version 1.22, so a compatible assistant works with that record within your permissions, and it is included on every tier.

Common questions

What can accountants actually use Claude for?
The advisory half of the practice: preparing for a client review, drafting the update or the report, summarising a meeting into actions, and answering questions that cut across your client book. All of these are judgement work where a draft saves time and a person still decides.
Should an accounting practice use AI for compliance work?
Not for the work that carries a deadline and a signature. Lodgements, reconciliations and filings need to be deterministic and auditable, which is the opposite of how an assistant behaves. Where it helps around compliance is the explaining and the chasing, not the preparing.
Can Claude access client data in Xero or a practice system?
Only where that system publishes an MCP server or connector and somebody authorises it, and then only within the permissions of the person who connected it. It is closer to the assistant being able to open the screens you can open than to it holding a copy of anything.
Is it safe to use AI with client financial information?
The technical answer is that a well built connection acts as you and can reach nothing you could not. The practice answer involves more: whether your engagement terms cover it, whether actions are logged and attributable, and who in the firm is permitted to connect a system in the first place.
Will AI replace work an accounting practice bills for?
It compresses the preparation rather than the judgement. The hours spent assembling a position before a conversation shrink considerably. The conversation, the recommendation and the responsibility for it do not, and in most practices those were always the part worth paying for.
